More about USCIS and Case Status
USCIS is the official government agency whose responsibility is to oversee lawful immigration in the USA. They are responsible for the immigration service, replacing the former INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service). Well, in reality, the former agency was divided into 3 different components: the USCIS, the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and CBP (Customs and Border Protection). Each of them has different roles and functions.
For the USCIS alone, they are to help immigrants with citizenship application processing, family members immigration management, and employment regulation within the United States.
How to Check Your Status
If you want to check your United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) case status, you can do it online. Simply access www.uscis.gov and you will be able to do tons of things, like submitting an inquiry regarding the case (or e-Request), how to locate the USCIS office, how to change the address online, or the times for processing cases.
If you want to check the status, make sure to have the so-called case receipt number on you. The number consists of a 13-character identifier that USCIS assigns for every petition or application. Each number is unique and different because it would help them track and identify each case. Each receipt number is comprised of 3 letters and then followed by another 10 numbers. When USCIS sends you notices, make sure to find them on those notices. Those letters can be MSC, IOE, NBC, SRC, LIN, EAC, or WAC.
When you provide the receipt number, make sure to delete the dashes, but feel free to include other characters, including the asterisks if they are part of those numbers. Once you have done so, the system will provide you with information on your case’s last action. If possible, you can learn about the next steps too. You may also get reminders about keeping the address current and whether you want to submit inquiries.
It would be handy to have an account with USCIS. Go to my.uscis.gov and create an account there. Through the personalized account, you can get the latest (case) updates.
